MAD MEN video

In this scene from the Season Four finale, Peggy and Joan try to figure out why they are still, despite all their hard work, treated like second-class citizens...

Thoughts?

  1. I thought this scene was probably too brief. Granted, I don't watch Mad Men in my free time, so the context was a little skewed (did the red haired one have her baby yet?), but it was clear that the two were frustrated that their boss was marrying his secretary, and that the secretary "envied" the brown haired girl's position. But then the two are exclaiming how they still do the same menial work as before, and get the same petty salary as before. Their titles mean nothing, as their accomplishments go unnoticed.

Again, I feel like this scene could have been drawn out a few more minutes, because it only gave us a glimpse of what the two were feeling--and how several other women must have felt while working similar positions in that era. But maybe that was the point; perhaps because women could only complain about such things so sparsely (to each other), that was why the scene was so short.

  2. Based on this very brief clip of Mad Men, I found myself becoming angry at Peggy. She accepted Don when he told her that he was engaged to his secretary. However, later on, Peggy complained to Joan about Don getting engaged and what a big deal it was being made into at the office.

I wish Peggy would have confronted Don. I know this isn't realistic for the time period, but I wish maybe she wouldn't have hugged him or seemed okay with him getting married for a second time.
