D.I.Y Foreign Aid Revolution

Here is an awesome article in last Sundays NYT. It doesn't have anything to do with horror but it is something positive happening for women.

It's a great example of women helping women and I loved reading it.

Enjoy!

  1. Grace, this article is amazing! It's crazy for me to think that girls and women would miss school or their jobs for their periods, but then again, the social embarassment would be frustrating. Also, because I'm sure clothes are relatively expensive, you know as well as I do that any stains would be very hard to get rid of. However, I was wondering...why didn't Diva Cups come into the picture? Banana leaves sound great--I wonder if they're available in the U.S. too.

...And what is up with Rwanda's 18% tax on feminine products?!?! That is absoultely ridiculous. For the most part, the only things taxed in the U.S. (food/product wise) are things we don't necessarily need or luxury items. Is a pad supposed to be a luxury item for women? I'm sorry, how often do we menstruate again? The comment in the article about lowering the cost and increasing the availability of cramp-reducing medicine would be a necessary solution too.

  2. Sorry, but reading further I'm getting frustrated at the second part of the article on page three, when the (male) author mentions of one entrepreneur that "devoting yourself to helphing others may seem wonderfully glamorous--until you're single, jobless and alone on a Saturday night." So just because she wanted to help others and really made a difference in their life, she needs to feel sorry for herself just because her fiance didn't share her views? Augh.
