Orlando

I hope you all enjoyed the film. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it, particularly the visual symbolism present. There are many visual elements that symbolize and comment upon gender in the film: ice, water, fire, trees and shrubs, weather, light and darkness, architecture, costuming, etc. Discuss a scene or theme that stayed with you.

  1. Through out the movie, when Orlando,, was in bed sleeping most of the time, the sheets were light colored, and there was light shining on to her. I found this interesting because it made her look like an angel, and the light always shined on her hair. Her hair through out the movie showed her growing out of her role as the man she knew how to be to the woman she wanted to be. In the beginning it was pulled back, and kept fairly short. As the movie progresses, her hair gets longer and she eventually allows it to be free and loose before she allows herself to be who she truly is.

There was one short scene which I wanted to bring up. A shot of Orlando's house with two trees, one on both sides of the door and men were entering the house. However, one tree was a lot smaller than the other.

One last scene that I thought was worth bringing up was when Orlando fell in love with the girl from France. It was during winter which fit well, with barely any sunlight, it was dark and dreary and the viewer could see that something bad or disappointing was bound to happen.
