Kotex sells tampons by making fun of tampons --Sociological Imagery
(Crenshaw is the "law professor who coined the term “intersectionality'". Kind of a big deal.)

  1. Abby--I remember seeing the Kotex commercial a few times before. Interestingly, I think it was only on a few of the Time Warner Cable "premium/satellite" channels here at school, rather than the regular Comcast cable that I have at home. In other words, I don't recall the major or typical networks airing them. Only the "special" networks like Oxygen might have, and it wasn't in the middle of the day either. It was quite late at night.

I wonder why a commercial as innovative and groundbreaking (and so true) as that wasn't showed more often. As for the Old Spice guy...what can I say other than I love those commercials. Never would I buy Old Spice (my dad uses it and it stinks), but I'll admit that the commercials are entertaining, and I do stop what I am doing to watch them.

  2. The tampon ad is clever and groundbreaking, and yet also a successful marketing ploy. I also love the Old Spice ads, and have enjoyed the retro appeal of some of the ads with Bruce Campbell (which appeared shortly before the 'man your man could smell like'' campaign).

I think the pertinent issue here is how advertising has turned to curious forms of subversion and anti-advertising to sell products.
